Book Sale Events

Volunteering for the semi-annual large book sale events (first Thursday, Friday and Saturday in June and in December) at the library meeting room is a fantastic way to support the community while indulging in love for books! Volunteers play a crucial role in making these events successful by assisting with set-up and cleanup, as well as serving as friendly greeters or helpful customer assistants and book stockers during the sale. With just a commitment of 2 hours each sale, it's a rewarding opportunity to connect with fellow book lovers and make a positive impact on the library.

Book Sorter

You can make a difference by sorting donated items into categories to sell in our Bookstore in the Watuaga County Public Library! Help us maintain the quality of our gently used donated books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, puzzles and games by discarding items that are in poor condition or outdated, and ensure our Book Sale Room is well-stocked. As our shelves fill up, you’ll also assist in packing items into boxes by category for storage off-site. This rewarding opportunity requires just several hours of your time one week each month.

Book Transporters

Book Transporters play a vital role in our organization by transporting gently used donated books and items from the library to our off-site storage unit at nearby Blue Skies Storage. With a time commitment of just a couple of hours a week, you’ll be playing an essential part in helping keep items organized and stored for our large book sale events twice a year.

Hospitality

The Hospitality Committee is dedicated to creating memorable events for the Friends of the Library members, library staff, and the community. They plan a variety of special events throughout the year, including the beloved annual library staff appreciation lunch, the festive Friends of the Library Annual Celebration, and a delightful children's book giveaway at the city's annual Boonerang event. Each event requires just a few hours of commitment once a year, making it a rewarding way to connect with  fellow book lovers and support the library. Join the Hospitality Committee and help bring these cherished events to life!

Marketing &
Communications

The Marketing and Communications Committee plays a vital role in connecting the community with the exciting activities and events happening with the Friends as well as the library! With a passion for sharing knowledge, this enthusiastic team utilizes various media channels, including social media, signage, the website, and news articles to keep everyone informed about volunteer opportunities and upcoming happenings. Whether it's a fun event or chance to lend a helping hand, the committee ensures that the community stays engaged and inspired. Time commitment varies on the event and media, making it a flexible way to get involved!

Reading & Rolling

Join our volunteer supported Reading and Rolling Program! This fantastic initiative partners with rural elementary schools and the Watauga County and Western Watauga Branch Libraries to bring a world of books right to the doorsteps of Kindergarten through fifth grade students. Every two weeks during the summer, our dedicated volunteers deliver a customized selection of books tailored to each child's interests, while also picking up and returning books from the previous delivery. If you're ready to share your love of reading and make a lasting impact in the community, we invite you to commit a few hours every two weeks this summer to help inspire young readers!

Little Free Libraries

Love books and want to make a difference in your community? Consider volunteering with the Friends of the Library to help stock one of our Little Free Libraries! These delightful book-sharing boxes, found throughout Watauga County, bring the joy of reading right to our neighborhoods—one book at a time. By giving just a bit of your time, you’ll help keep the shelves full and the stories flowing, ensuring that readers of all ages have access to free books whenever they need a little literary escape. It’s a simple, rewarding way to share your love of reading and support our mission to “take a book, share a book.”
