What We Do

Reading & Rolling

For over two decades, the Reading and Rolling program has been a cherished initiative of the Friends of the Library, bringing the joy of reading directly to elementary students in Watauga County's most rural areas. Every summer, registered kindergarten through fifth-grade students receive personalized bags filled with hand-selected books, delivered biweekly by dedicated volunteers using their own vehicles. These volunteers often traverse challenging routes, covering up to 100 miles per delivery, ensuring that children have consistent access to engaging reading material during the school break. Beyond these deliveries, the Friends of the Library generously support local school media centers by contributing $15 for each participating student, enabling the purchase of new books that benefit the entire school community. This collaborative effort not only fosters a love for reading but also strengthens the bond between libraries, schools, and families, creating a lasting impact on children's literacy and learning.

Books & Crannies Used Bookstore

The Friends of the Library maintain a cozy bookstore inside the Watauga County Public Library, offering a wide selection of gently used books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, games, and puzzles—all available at very affordable prices. Open during regular library hours, the bookstore is lovingly cared for by dedicated volunteers who sort community donations and restock the shelves daily. Every purchase directly supports the library, making it easy for visitors to find a great read while helping a great cause.

Semi-Annual Used Book Sale Events

Twice a year, on the first Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of June and December, the Friends of the Library host a much-anticipated Book Sale event in the Library Meeting Room. With over 5,000 gently used books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, games, and magazines available, there’s truly something for everyone—and all at great prices. The sale is thoughtfully organized by category and genre to make browsing easy and enjoyable. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers helps transport boxes of items from off-site storage, staff the sale, and assist with clean-up once it wraps up. Proceeds from the sale go directly to supporting the Watauga County Public Library, making this a fun and meaningful way to give back.

Annual Celebration Event

Each spring, the Friends of the Library host their Annual Celebration Event—a special occasion that brings together members and the community to celebrate a year of accomplishments. During this two-hour event, brief remarks highlight the volunteer-run organization’s activities and contributions to the library. A featured local author, writer, or editor is typically invited to speak on a topic of interest, offering insight and inspiration to attendees. Free and open to the public, the Annual Celebration is a welcoming gathering for all who support and enjoy the library.

Outreach

The Friends of the Library proudly sponsor a number of Little Free Libraries throughout Watauga County, encouraging community members to “take a book, share a book.” These charming book-sharing boxes offer free access to reading materials for all ages and are maintained by dedicated Friends volunteers. Stocked with books generously donated by the community, the Little Free Libraries help spread the joy of reading far beyond the walls of the library and into neighborhoods across the county.

Each year at the City of Boone’s Boonerang event, the Friends of the Library delight in giving away free books to children who attend. It’s a joyful part of the celebration, helping to spark a love of reading in young minds while connecting families with the library. The books are carefully selected from community donations and are available for children of all ages to take home and enjoy. With smiling faces and stories in hand, the Friends are proud to be part of this fun, family-friendly tradition that brings books and the community together.
